My decluttering journey
I think writing a decluttering journal might help.
So, after discussing with my family and friends, I decided to create a blog to document all my decluttering journey. I think it will boost my motivation a lot to declutter and pack my house. I like to update my social media status with my decluttering status. Till a point where my friends asked me "why are you still packing after all these years?"
Yes, I failed miserably!
This will be my 2019 resolution for sure!
I am a stay-at-home-mum (SAHM) since 2011 and I have a lot of hobbies that take up a lot of space at home to store them, i.e. sewing, beading, scrap booking, reading, crocheting, etc. You can imagine the amount of space I need to store the materials of each hobby. Of course, my children have their own set of items that require a lot of space too, i.e. books and toys.
I threw, sold and donated a lot of these over the years but I refilled up the space with other items. There are always things to buy in the shops or online. I am not sure if I am stressed or just buy for the sake of buying. This cannot go on for sure.
I came across Marie Kondo on the social media and decided to buy her books to read up. Frankly, I was inspired by her to Spark Joy and followed some of the methods to declutter. In order,
1. Clothes
2. Books (I sold off her books, isn't it great to practise what I read?)
3. Papers
4. Komono (Miscellaneous)
(You can borrow her books from the library or google for the subcategory of each category.)
It was easy doing the first 3. However, the last one is quite tough for me. Sentimental stuffs are the worst of the lot.
I also began to borrow more books in the library on minimalism, storage, packing, etc in both English and Chinese versions. If you asked me, my personal opinion is to read Chinese books as mostly were translated from Japanese books. I felt that Japan case studies are more applicable to us because we are living in an apartment. For the American case studies, they are harder to relate to. I read up so many books till there are no more books for me to borrow in the library. My favourite topic is minimalism. You will get to know the reasons if you follow my blog posts.
I hope I can share more on my experience and knowledge in this blog. Chinese New Year is coming soon and I want to start spring cleaning earlier.
Start small if you think it is too overwhelming. You can start by throwing 3 things everyday. By the end of the 365 days, you would have thrown 1095 items! Amazing, right?
Share with us why you want to declutter in the comments. Let's work together!
